Description:
Each prison has the responsibility to use all available resources to prevent inmate rebellions, disturbances, and riots. It is the responsibility of correctional facilities to be prepared at all times to control such occurrences if and when they take place. This course will take an in-depth look at the atmosphere of correctional incidents, disturbance and ultimately riots; the effect of inmate culture on riots; the stages of a riot; the role of corrections officers before, during and after riots, emergency response; and hostage survival. It is the overall objective of this course to help staff recognize the causes of riots, how to prevent them and what to do if they should occur.

The major causes of inmate/prisoner rebellions, disturbances and riots.
Inmate culture as it applies to correction facilities.
Brief overview of Security Threat Groups inside of a corrections facility.
Stages of a major riot.
The role of the Corrections Officer before, during and after prison riots.
Pre-Planning for riots and disturbances.
Implementing an critical incident management plan
Surviving as a hostage during a riot.
Release and readjustment after a hostage taking.
