Description:
As guardian of large numbers of prisoners/inmates, some of whom are quite dangerous, correctional employees are confronted with everyday situations in which it is necessary to use force to control individuals that refuse to obey facility rules and regulations. Before deciding to use any type of force, correctional employees need to understand the legal implications, the limitations, as well as the consequences associated with each use of force. This course takes an in-depth look at the Use of Force as it applies to a correctional setting. The following topics will be covered.
Objectives:
Discuses definitions of Force, Less-than-Deadly Force, Excessive Force, Deadly Force.
Identify factors that must be conceded before the decision to use force is made.
Identify the four elements used to justify the Use of Force.
Identify the difference between Planned & Reactive Force.
Identify at least six general situations when force may be used against an inmate/prisoner.
Identify at least three situations in which deadly force can be used against an inmate/prisoner.
Through discussion explain the five levels of the Action – Response Continuum.
Identify who is responsible for documenting a use of force.
Identify the two specific areas to address when documenting a use of force.
Identify the possible sanctions that could be pursued in the event an employee misuses force.
Associated risk factors
