Description:
This 40 hour course is designed to supply the correctional investigator with the tools necessary to conduct investigations in the correctional setting, and the ability to document a crime scene and to collect critical evidence, in a manner conducive to a successful prosecution.
Day one:
This day will cover the methodology of investigations to include scientific problem solving means, the gathering and management of intelligence data and the analysis of crime patterns within the institution. A focus on group dynamics for the investigation of organized crime within a correctional environment will be discusses as well as data mining and association matrix development.
Day two:
Interviewing of victim and suspect will be addressed. Dynamics of interviewing to obtain a confession and use of methods to determine deceit will be covered.
Day three:
Inasmuch as fires are a problem in many institutions, there will be a class on the preliminary examination of a fire scene for origin and cause. This class is designed to give the investigator a working knowledge of fire behavior, fire patterns and the reading of fire patterns to determine the area or origin. The investigation of Improvised Explosive Devices will be confined to those devices which have been historically made in correctional facilities using available precursors.
Documentation of crime scenes will finish the day with methods for successfully working and controlling crimes scenes to locate and recover evidence. Field sketching and documents for presentation for court drawings will be done as well as search methods, documenting and cataloging evidence and video taping of crime scenes will also be accomplished.
Day four:
The first block of instruction will be to the history and science of fingerprints and impression evidence with practical work on recovery of such using powder development and lifting methods. Recovery of trace evidence and the value of such to include proper recovery methods, packaging and storage of evidence for presentation in court will be addressed.
The use of biological evidence such as blood, body fluids, and DNA will be taken into account with recovery methods and preservation for laboratory testing will be done.
Day five:
Basic forensic photography to include the use of the camera to record the collection of evidence will be done using accepted standard methods of photography. Use of scale and sequential photography practices will be done.
The culmination of the class will be a practical exercise where the student can demonstrate the skills learned in a mock crime scene. This exercise will be evaluated by the instructors.

A practical exercise will be conducted in a cell block of the former West Virginia Penitentiary to demonstrate the students abilities with the information and tools provided.
